Researched, not sailed yet

Silversea puts a butler in every suite on every ship, which no other line of its size does. It sells two fare types, one with flights and transfers and one without, and the cheaper one is the right one for most Southwest Florida clients because Fort Lauderdale is a drive. I have not sailed Silversea. I know its fare structure well because it trips people up.

Silver, Royal, Grand and Owner's Suites

  • Every suite has a butler, from the smallest Vista Suite to the Owner's Suite. That is the line's defining rule.
  • Silver Suites are the sensible step up: a separate living room and a bigger veranda for a modest premium.
  • Royal, Grand and Owner's Suites are two-room or three-room apartments. Some can join with the suite next door for families or friends.
  • On Silver Nova and Silver Ray the layout is asymmetric. Suites on the starboard side have the best sea views; the pool sits on the port side.

The deep page: Silversea.

What comes with it

  • Butler service in every suite
  • Open bars and stocked in-suite bar
  • Most restaurants; a few speciality venues charge
  • Gratuities and Wi-Fi
  • Flights, transfers and one excursion per port on the Door-to-Door fare only

From Florida

Silversea usually bases one ship in Fort Lauderdale from November to April for Caribbean sailings, two hours from Naples on I-75 and I-595. The rest of the fleet is in Europe, Asia, Alaska, the Galápagos and Antarctica, reached by air.

The ships

Silver Ray · Silver Nova · Silver Dawn · Silver Moon · Silver Muse · Silver Spirit · Silver Endeavour · Silver Cloud

Italian in origin and still Italian in feel, with a formal dining room, a pool deck that empties by mid-afternoon and a crowd that reads in the sun.

Who it fits

  • Travellers who want a butler without paying for the top suite.
  • Anyone who likes a fully hosted trip and will pay for the Door-to-Door fare to get the flights sorted.
  • Couples who want to visit the Galápagos or Antarctica on a ship that still feels like a hotel.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Families with children.
  • Anyone who wants a lively evening. Bars go quiet by eleven.
